How to Protect and Maintain Your Evaporative Cooling System

Posted by FarmLab Innovations on May 15, 2019

As summer approaches and temperatures skyrocket, producers become increasingly dependent on evaporative cooling systems to preserve the health and comfort of their animals. While cool cell systems are extremely beneficial, they also require a significant amount of maintenance in order to remain sanitary and function properly.

Some of the common problems producers encounter with their evaporative cooling systems include:

  • Algae buildup
  • Uneven water distribution
  • Mineral buildup
  • Scaling
  • Unsanitary equipment

These issues prevent your system from functioning properly and can lead to costly maintenance concerns. Here are some tips for ensuring your evaporative cooling system is operating optimally:

Don’t let pads sit in water for extended periods of time

When algae are allowed to grow, pads quickly become clogged, thus drastically shortening the life of the equipment. To prevent the growth of algae, never let pads sit in water for extended periods of time. Allow pads to completely dry out at least once every 24 hours, and clean pumps regularly to deter growth.

Checked for clog distribution pipes

Dry areas on cool cell pads are a strong indicator that your distribution pipe is filled with debris or scale buildup. To prevent this from happening, bleed off at least five percent of the water weekly to stop calcium and salt from accumulating.

Perform a regular and thorough cleaning of equipment

Proper cleaning is essential in order to keep your evaporative cooling system in good working order. Some key steps to attend to include:

  • Removing the pads from the system: Carefully inspect them for signs of wear and tear, or even the presence of insects or the formation of rodents’ nests.
  • Gently rinsing debris: Avoid using a pressure washer to prevent damage to the system.
  • Cleaning pad framing: Eliminate dirt and buildup.
  • Refilling the system with fresh water: You’ll want to flush your distribution pipe and unclog any holes that have become blocked over time.

For those looking for an added boost of protection for their cool cell pads, SWASHCOOL-CELL is the perfect solution. SWASHCOOL-CELL™ is a solution that controls the water quality found within these delicate systems. The product neutralizes water’s pH while simultaneously buffering the system to prevent rapid shifts in pH levels. Meanwhile, chelating agents and dispersants keep calcium and dirt dispersed to prevent harmful build-up from occurring, thus protecting the equipment and extending its longevity while also improving air flow.

When the pH in the water exceeds 8, the water’s hue also changes, indicating that it’s time to add SWASHCOOL-CELL™ to the system and/or that the equipment needs to be flushed. SWASH pH Indicator graphic square_revised
